In the 1950s, wristwatch engineers around the world focused on two goals: maximizing accuracy and minimizing thickness. Seiko started dedicating itself to wristwatch development, and had successfully created new models that achieved these goals by 1960.
One was the Grand Seiko, specializing in accuracy. The other was the ultra-thin Seiko Goldfeather.

As the name suggests, the Seiko Goldfeather dress watch was designed to make it feel as light and gentle as a feather on users' wrists.
It featured Caliber 60, which is just 2.95 mm thick. It was the world's thinnest three-hand mechanical movement at that time.

Over 60 years later, Goldfeather was reborn in July 2023. It was designed to pay homage to the original ultra-thin Seiko mechanical watch, and introduced as part of the new Credor collection.

History

Seiko started developing thin mechanical watches more than 60 years ago.

The ultra-thin Seiko Goldfeather was born, by achieving one of the goals in wristwatch design: minimizing thickness. This was done thanks to Caliber 60, which is just 2.95 mm thick, the world's thinnest three-hand mechanical movement at that time.

The basic design principles of Caliber 60 were further enhanced in the new Caliber 6800, released in 1969. Caliber 6800 was just 1.98 mm thick, and was one of the thinnest two-hand mechanical movements at that time.
The Seiko U.T.D. (Ultra Thin Dress) wristwatch, powered by the new Caliber 6800 and Seiko's highest technology, was introduced as Seiko Special Watches.

Production of the Caliber 6810 was stopped temporarily due to the popularity of quartz movements, but it started being used again in 1992 for the Seiko 110th Anniversary Limited Edition. It was the first mechanical watch to be released in about ten years.
This model was so popular that it sold out almost instantly.
